How to Renew your Florida Medical Card

Getting your medical card is the first step; maintaining it requires renewing your Florida medical marijuana card through recertification*. Thrive Alternative Medicine helps ensure renewing your Florida medical cannabis certification is simple. We provide reminders about your recertification and offer in-person and telemedicine renewal appointments.

Florida law requires that prior to initially obtaining your medical marijuana card, a qualified physician at an approved facility, such as Thrive Alternative Medicine, conducts an in-person physical examination. However, after this in-person examination, subsequent examinations, such as for your medical card renewal, may be done through telehealth appointments if it’s with the same doctor that saw you in person. This means that once you come to our office for an examination, you are then eligible for telehealth appointments for recertifications every 7 months. This can be a great benefit if you have a busy life, mobility challenges, or difficulty traveling to our office.

At Thrive, our goal is to make the process of obtaining and renewing your medical marijuana card as easy as possible. We are here for your questions and want to make sure you have all the information you need.

Your medical marijuana card expires one (1) year after the date of approval and the expiration date is located on your medical card under your date of birth. Recertification requires you to submit a renewal application, an application fee, and any supporting documents within forty-five (45) days of the card expiration date. This can be completed online or by mail and typically takes up to ten (10) days to process.  Rest assured, we help our patients plan accordingly for this timeline.

Although your marijuana card expires after twelve (12) months, Florida law requires follow-up appointments every 210 days (approximately every 7 months), to remain active on the Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR)**. This allows your doctors to review your certification, symptoms, updates or changes in your medical condition or prescription medicine, and other important information. Florida patients with chronic or long-term health conditions can find that their condition and symptoms change over time. Symptoms may be better managed and improved, or other diagnoses or complications may develop. Every 7 months, regular check-ins with your certifying physician can help reduce the risk of potential risks and ensure that you are best able to manage your condition with medical marijuana.

Is Telemedicine an Option for Renewing?

Yes, once you’ve already seen our qualified Thrive doctor for an in-person visit.  Effective July 1, 2023, HB 387 allowed for the use of telehealth for medical marijuana recertification in Florida. Patients can schedule an online telehealth appointment if they return to the same physician who previously certified them for a medical marijuana card. Thrive offers both telemedicine and in-person recertification appointments.

What If a Florida Medical Marijuana Card Expires?

A Florida marijuana card has an expiration date twelve (12) months after it has been issued. Once your card expires, it is illegal for dispensaries to sell cannabis products to you and will not be permitted to purchase medicinal cannabis products from any Florida dispensary.

Don’t let your medical marijuana card expire.  Established Thrive patients can call us to request a priority appointment for recertification. Same-day appointments may be available.

If your medical card hasn’t expired and your address or legal name changes, you must log into your Florida Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU) Registry patient profile and update that information. All patients with medical marijuana cards must keep contact information updated and correct in the OMMU registry.  Thrive patients have access to our team who can help with OMMU registry changes.

We also accept transfer patients. When your medical marijuana card needs to be renewed and you prefer to see a new doctor, Thrive can accept transfer patients. Transfer patients are people who saw a different medical marijuana doctor, have a current or expired Florida Medical Marijuana Card, and are looking for a change.
